Ana Cristina Guadaño-Ferraz, PhD, is a Scientific Researcher at the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC) and Principal Investigator and Group Leader at the Instituto de Investigaciones Biomédicas Sols-Morreale (IIBM, Madrid, Spain, CSIC-UAM). She leads the Thyroid Hormones and Central Nervous System group, which investigates the role of thyroid hormones in brain development, function, and disease.
Her research has provided key insights into the molecular mechanisms of thyroid hormone action in the CNS and their relevance to rare neurological disorders, particularly Allan–Herndon–Dudley Syndrome (AHDS), an X-linked disorder caused by inactivating mutations in the thyroid hormone transporter MCT8. Their recent work has focused on unraveling the pathophysiology of AHDS, identifying therapeutic targets, and conducting preclinical studies aimed at developing effective treatments for the neurological disabilities associated with this condition.
Dr. Guadaño-Ferraz has published extensively in leading journals and made seminal contributions to understanding thyroid hormone transport and metabolism in the brain. She maintains active collaborations with leading international researchers in the field of thyroid hormone action and is also actively involved in mentoring young scientists and promoting gender equity in neuroscience through the Women in Neuroscience (WINS) Committee of the Spanish Society of Neuroscience.
